Local hog industry recovers gradually

The local hog industry is recovering gradually from the onslaught of African swine fever more than two years ago.

Dr. Alberto Venturina, Bataan chief veterinarian, said some former hog raisers are now back to business after recovering from financial losses due to ASF. “But our hog raisers now are able to export hogs to other provinces,” Venturina said in a text message.

“Marami na din backyard farms na nag o- operate ngayon. Ang presyo ngayon ng karneng baboy ay P230 per kilo (live weight),” said Venturina.

The office of Venturina, however, is now closely monitoring and had placed under surveillance slaughter houses and commercial farms because many animals are affected by incessant rains.
“Kaya binabantayan namin dahil maraming hayop ang nagkakasakit ngayon dahil sa ulan,” he explained.
